A Photo Essay

Typically the mehfils of Sama' are held at night and often continued till next morning. In Hazrat Nizamuddin's monastery, qawwals used to recite Ghazals - often unaccompanied by any intruments, except sometimes the beats of a duff, or taali (clapping). The present day qawwali with the use of instruments may have evolved much later.
