Dhruv Sangari About Dhruv Sangari

Educational Qualification

MA. in Music, Faculty of Music and Fine Arts, University of Delhi.

Professional Training:

Dhruv began training in music at the age of 7 under Ms. Shahana Bannerjee of the Gwalior Gharana. At the age of 11, he developed a keen interest in the art of percussion and started learning the Tabla under Pandit B.S. Ramanna of the Lucknow Gharana.

By the age of 13, Dhruv had become deeply interested in Sufism and Sufi music, especially Qawwali and started pursuing the form under Ustad Meraj Nizami Qawwal of the Delhi Gharana. From 1994-96, he was guided by the legendary maestro late Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

During his graduate and postgraduate years Dhruv learnt Khayal, Dhrupad and related forms under master musician Ustad Ghulam Sadiq Khan of the Rampur Gharana. Harmonium virtuoso Ustad Mehmood Dhaulpuri also trained him. Other professors included Dr. Krishna Bisht, Dr. Najma Parveen Ahmed, Dr. Anjali Mittal, Dr. Manjushree Tyagi and Dr.Shailendra Goswami.

Work experience:

Dhruv is a talented vocal performer and has been working professionally since 1999. His repertoire includes Persian and Arabic poetry, Panjabi and Hindvi Sufi poetry and Urdu Poetry.

Dhruv has received several prizes and felicitations at various college and university level competitons. He has performed in a number of music festivals such as Baba Hari Ballabh and Ganesh Utsav. He has sung for a number of studios as well as radio and television.

Dhruv has performed both classical and qawwali music all over India and has worked under many great artistes such as Ustad Iqbal Khan, Vidya Rao and Madan Gopal Sigh and recently recorded for an art installation with dancer Anusha Lall. He has also worked with renowned Mexican Saxophone player and artiste Ariel Guzik, Egyptian Dancer Ahmed Faares, British Electronic musician Vishal Gopal, Russian Violinist Gennady Lavrentyev, Panaman percussionist Osvaldo Jorge, Swiss musicians David Scruffari and Lionel Dentan, Pakistani Sitarist Qasim Ahmed and Iranian tar-saz player Reza Zemani.

With his troupe ‘Rooh’ Dhruv has won praise among connoisseurs and critics in private gatherings as well as commercial shows.
Besides having done shows and workshops with several Universities, NGO’s, United Nations and diplomatic missions; Dhruv has also performed and worked in countries like USA, UK, Dubai and Pakistan.

Work related details:

In early 2004, Dhruv joined as an artiste/associate in a musical company called ‘Da-Saz’
With their own studio and practice space the group have been for the past year, recording music for an album 'Jet-Lag' featuring Dhruv’s voice and the music of the bands Mystique and Rooh.  In 2006 he co-founded another media firm Ektara India.
